The third edition of Women’s Premier League auction will be held in Bengaluru on Sunday ahead of WPL’s third edition. With just 19 slots left to fill, the third instalment of the WPL auction will be completed within a couple of hours. Despite just 19 available slots, almost 400 players registered to be a part of this auction.
From the initial pool of 400 players, 120 were shortlisted for the WPL auction after consulting with the five franchises. The shortlist includes 91 Indian players (nine capped) and 29 overseas players. The youngest player on the shortlist is 13-year-old left-arm seamer Anshu Nagar from Delhi, while the oldest is 34-year-old Australian batter Laura Harris, who was recently let go by Delhi Capitals.
Out of the five franchises, the Gujrat Giants – owned by the Adani Group – hold the largest purse (4.4 crores) going into the auction. They need to fill four roster spots with that money. In stark contrast, last season’s runners-up Delhi Capitals have the least funds available in the auction after they decided to keep hold of most of the squad. They go into the auction with a 2.5 crores budget.
In a twist that sets the WPL apart from the IPL, there's no Impact Player rule here—meaning teams are stuck with the XI they announce at the toss. But there's a silver lining: teams can field up to five overseas players, as long as one hails from an Associate nation. So far, two standout players from these countries have made their mark: Tara Norris from the USA, who stunned everyone by taking the WPL’s first-ever five-wicket haul for DC against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kathryn Bryce from Scotland.
For the 2024 WPL auction, there are three other players from Associate nations in the competition: UAE’s top-order batter Theertha Satish, allrounder Samaira Dharnidharka, and Scotland’s Sarah Bryce, who was recently part of the Sydney Sixers squad in the WBBL.
The WPL 2025 auction telecast will be available on Star Sports. The live streaming for the online platform will be available on Jio Cinema on the website and app.
The BCCI is eyeing a three-week window in January for the third edition of the WPL. With the IPL set to kick off in mid-March, that leaves just a narrow two-month window for the WPL to take place. However, the final dates and venues are still under wraps.
