The ICC has introduced two major changes to ODI cricket in 2025 to enhance balance and strategy. Now, two new balls will be used only till the 34th over, after which the bowling team selects one to finish the innings. Additionally, teams must pre-nominate five players — a batter, bowler, spinner, wicketkeeper, and all-rounder — as eligible concussion substitutes before the match. These changes aim to modernize and sharpen the format.
Cricket's evolution continues in 2025, and this time, the spotlight is on the One Day International (ODI) format. In a bid to make ODIs more strategic and engaging, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced two significant changes that are already generating buzz among players, fans, and analysts.
In a significant tweak to match dynamics, two new balls will continue to be used — but only till the 34th over. After that, the bowling team will select one of the two balls to use for the remaining 16 overs.
This change is aimed at restoring balance between bat and ball in the latter stages of the innings, especially at the death when reverse swing and grip on older balls were previously non-existent due to the two-new-ball rule introduced in 2011. Now, bowlers — especially pacers and spinners — will have more control as the ball begins to age and behave differently in the final overs.
Another impactful update involves the concussion substitute rule. Teams are now required to submit five designated players before the match — including one batter, one bowler, one spinner, one wicketkeeper, and one all-rounder — who can be used as a like-for-like substitute in case of a concussion-related incident during the game.
This update adds clarity, fairness, and strategic depth, ensuring substitutes fit seamlessly into the game without causing imbalance or confusion mid-match.
These bold changes reflect cricket's ongoing effort to keep the ODI format fresh, fair, and exciting in a fast-evolving sports landscape. As teams adapt, fans can expect new tactics, thrilling finishes, and a whole new layer of strategy in the 50-over game.
