Mohammed Shami made an unforgettable return to the Sunrisers Hyderabad lineup on Friday as he struck gold with the very first ball of the match against Chennai Super Kings. The seasoned pacer removed CSK opener Shaik Rasheed off the opening delivery of Match 43 in IPL 2025 — and in doing so, etched his name into the record books.
Shami became the first bowler in IPL history to take a wicket off the first ball of an innings four times, surpassing a group of elite pacers — Umesh Yadav, Trent Boult, Praveen Kumar, Lasith Malinga, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Ashok Dinda — all of whom have done it three times.
Coming back into the side after being left out against Mumbai Indians, Shami wasted no time in making an impact. His delivery to Rasheed was classic Shami — pitched up, moving late, and teasing just enough outside off to force the batter into a false shot. Rasheed tried to punch it but only managed a thick outside edge. Abhishek Sharma, stationed at first slip, took a sharp low catch to his right, giving Shami his moment. His previous first-ball scalps in the IPL have included big names like Jacques Kallis, KL Rahul, and Phil Salt — and now Rasheed joins that list.
While Shami hasn’t quite set the 2025 season alight so far — just five wickets in seven games before this, with an economy rate nearing 11 — this moment was a reminder of his quality and knack for making things happen, especially with a brand-new ball in hand. With this latest feat, Shami now stands alone at the top of an unusual but impressive stat — the most first-ball wickets in IPL innings history.
