Rajasthan Royals' downward spiral in IPL 2025 just got worse. Their 11-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy marked their fifth consecutive loss — something that’s only happened once before in the franchise’s history. But unlike 2009-10, when that losing streak spanned across two seasons, this time it’s all come crashing down in one brutal stretch.
What’s more painful for RR fans is how close the team has been to winning several of those games. Against both Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, they couldn’t chase down nine runs in the final over. And most recently, against RCB, they were cruising before stumbling at the death, failing to get 18 from the last 12 balls. With Sanju Samson sidelined, Riyan Parag has taken the reins as captain. After the latest defeat, he didn’t mince words. “We’ve got to play for pride now. There are a lot of fans who support us. There are a lot of people who work really hard for us to come out here and play in a tournament like this,” Parag said. “Have got to do it for them. Have to be very grateful and honoured to play this game and play for this franchise and we’ve got to show it next time we play.”
Despite the disastrous form, RR aren’t out of the playoff picture just yet — at least not mathematically. If they manage to win all of their remaining five matches, they’ll finish with 14 points. That tally was good enough to get RCB into the playoffs last year, but this time, the competition looks stiffer. Several teams are already within striking distance of 16 points — Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals, and RCB need just two wins each to get there. Others like MI, PBKS, and LSG could also surpass the Royals with three more wins apiece. Even KKR, currently seventh, can still reach 16 if they win five out of their six remaining games.
All of this means that even if RR pull off the unlikely feat of winning five in a row, they could still miss out — unless a lot of things go their way. They’ll also need to improve their net run rate, which currently sits at 0.625, to have any shot in a tight table. The Royals return to action at home on Monday when they host the in-form Gujarat Titans. Their margin for error? Zero. Their chances? Slim. But this is the IPL — stranger things have happened.
