Just a day after bidding farewell to international cricket, Nicholas Pooran has stepped into a new role — captain of MI New York for the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) season. He takes over from the seasoned Kieron Pollard.
Pooran has been part of MI New York since the inaugural season, and he played a massive role in helping the team lift the trophy in 2023. Who could forget that outrageous unbeaten 137 off 55 balls in the final against Seattle Orcas? He didn’t just seal the title — he ended up as the top scorer of the tournament with 388 runs, miles ahead of Quinton de Kock, who finished second with 264.
The left-hander is arguably at the peak of his powers in T20 cricket. In 2024 alone, he smashed more sixes than anyone else in the format — 170 in total. And in IPL 2025, he finally crossed the 500-run mark for the first time in a single season, while also clearing the ropes 40 times, breaking the record for most sixes in an IPL campaign.
Pooran’s journey with the MI setup has been an interesting one. Though he was first picked up by Mumbai Indians back in 2017, he never got a game and was let go the following season. After that, he made his way through other IPL teams like Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and is currently with Lucknow Super Giants. But his connection with the MI brand endured through their ILT20 team, MI Emirates, and now with MI New York.
He’s no stranger to leadership either. Pooran captained the West Indies in white-ball cricket back in 2022, although that stint was tough — only 8 wins in 30 games. After the Windies crashed out in the first round of the 2022 T20 World Cup, he stepped down from the role.
This season of MLC is also seeing some other leadership shakeups. Glenn Maxwell, who recently walked away from ODI cricket to focus on T20s ahead of next year’s World Cup, has been named captain of Washington Freedom. He replaces Steven Smith at the helm. Freedom, by the way, are the reigning MLC champions, having taken down the Unicorns in last season’s final.
The 2025 edition of Major League Cricket kicks off on June 12 with San Francisco Unicorns facing Washington Freedom. MI New York begin their campaign a day later, on June 13, against Texas Super Kings. With a lineup that includes names like Quinton de Kock, Rashid Khan, and Kieron Pollard, Pooran now takes charge of a star-studded MI New York squad — but this time, he’s the one calling the shots.
