Mustafizur Rahman Replaces Jake Fraser-McGurk in Delhi Capitals Squad for IPL 2025

Jake Fraser-McGurk has officially pulled out of IPL 2025, becoming the second overseas player after CSK’s Jamie Overton to confirm he won’t be returning when the tournament resumes on May 17. The young Australian batter had flown home after the military tensions between India and Pakistan escalated earlier this month, which also forced the IPL into a week-long suspension. While a number of overseas players are now confirming their return, Fraser-McGurk has informed Delhi Capitals that he won’t be coming back.

DC rope in Mustafizur as McGurk’s replacement

In McGurk’s place, DC have signed Bangladesh left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman for INR 6 crore. The franchise made the announcement on Wednesday, saying: “The JSW and GMR co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals today announced the signing of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement for Australian opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who will be unavailable for the remainder of the TATA IPL 2025 season.”

Fraser-McGurk, who was bought at the last mega auction for a hefty INR 9 crore (around USD 1.07 million), just didn’t hit his stride this season. He played six games and managed only 55 runs, eventually losing his place in the XI even before the halfway mark. Given his limited impact, his absence isn’t expected to rattle Delhi’s plans too much. Mustafizur, on the other hand, could prove to be a timely addition—especially with Delhi’s bowling often leaking runs at the death. The Fizz is no stranger to the franchise, having turned out for them in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, he grabbed eight wickets in eight games with an impressive economy of 7.62, though he had a limited role last season.

IPL rules typically allow mid-season replacements only in case of injuries or illnesses before a team's 12th match. However, with the extraordinary circumstances around the mid-season suspension, the league has tweaked its rules to allow franchises to bring in temporary replacements for the remainder of the tournament.

With Delhi still clinging to playoff hopes, the Fizz's return could be just what they need to tighten up in crunch moments. As for Fraser-McGurk, it’s a pause on a journey that many hope will resume with a bang next year.
