MS Dhoni is set to add another iconic chapter to his legendary career tonight. The Chennai Super Kings skipper will walk out at Chepauk for his 400th T20 match when CSK take on Sunrisers Hyderabad.
At 43, Dhoni continues to be a defining figure in T20 cricket. With 190 wins in 325 matches as captain, he holds the record for the most victories by any skipper in the format. And when it comes to wicketkeeping, there’s no one ahead of him either — he’s pulled off over 310 dismissals in T20s, and sits just three away from completing 200 dismissals in the IPL alone.
With this game, Dhoni becomes just the 24th cricketer — and only the fourth Indian — to play 400 T20 matches, joining the likes of Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik, and Rohit Sharma. But as far as the IPL goes, Dhoni remains the face of the league — with a record 272 appearances, 5377 runs, and five titles with CSK to his name. Throw in a T20 World Cup in 2007 and two Champions League titles, and his trophy cabinet speaks for itself.
Globally, only T20 giants like Kieron Pollard (695), Dwayne Bravo (582), and Shoaib Malik (557) have played more matches. But for Indian fans, few moments will match the sight of Dhoni completing this feat in front of the yellow sea at Chepauk. Even in IPL 2025, he’s still got that trademark Dhoni finish in him — scoring 134 runs across eight innings at a strike rate of over 150. He’s averaging 33.50 this season, but Dhoni has received some slack this season for coming out to bat as low as No.9. Nevertheless, tonight will be another reminder of just how much Dhoni has given — and still gives — to the game.
