Punjab Kings look set to lose one of their key pacers for the rest of IPL 2025, with Lockie Ferguson likely ruled out due to a serious injury. Speaking ahead of PBKS’ big clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, the team’s fast bowling coach James Hopes didn’t sound optimistic about Ferguson’s return, admitting that the chances of seeing the New Zealand speedster back this season are "a very low percentage."
Ferguson picked up the injury during PBKS’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, pulling up sharply while delivering a ball and immediately hobbling off the field. Hopes gave an update that Ferguson has “done a real decent injury to himself,” and while no detailed diagnosis has been released yet, the signs don’t look good for a quick recovery.
It’s a blow for Punjab, especially since Ferguson had been quietly effective in the early games. He managed five wickets in four matches, with an average of 20.80 and a slightly expensive economy rate of just over 9. But in a season where fast bowlers have often gone the distance, Ferguson’s raw pace and experience had added valuable depth to the attack.
Reflecting on the team's recent loss to SRH, Hopes didn’t shy away from admitting where things went wrong. “That was a bit disappointing for us,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a high-scoring match. We put up a great total, but dropping catches really cost us. That match slipped away because we couldn’t hold on to our chances.”
PBKS are still very much in the playoff hunt, sitting sixth on the points table with three wins from five games — just behind KKR, who’ve played a game more. But with Ferguson likely out and fielding errors creeping in, Punjab will need to tighten things up if they want to stay in the race.
