Kevin Pietersen Joins Delhi Capitals as Mentor for IPL 2025

Former England skipper and Delhi Daredevils’ player Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as Delhi Capitals’ mentor for IPL 2025. The 44-year-old will be working alongside head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott, and bowling coach Munaf Patel. Overseeing the entire operation is Venugopal Rao, the franchise’s director of cricket.

For Pietersen, this is a fresh challenge in a league he knows all too well. The former England star, who last played in the IPL in 2016, is eager to make an impact. “It’s an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals,” he said in a press release from the franchise. “And I’m really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize.”

Pietersen has a strong history in the IPL, having represented three different franchises over five seasons since 2009. He captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru briefly in 2009 before taking charge of Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2014. However, that season didn’t go as planned, with the team finishing at the bottom of the table after managing just two wins in 14 matches.

Despite his unsuccessful stint as Delhi’s captain, Pietersen has remained close to the franchise, particularly with Kiran Kumar Grandhi, chairman of GMR, the co-owners of DC. Their relationship has extended beyond the IPL, with Pietersen even playing a key role in brokering a landmark deal between GMR and Hampshire County Cricket Club last year. The two were also spotted together at England’s T20I against Australia at the Utilita Bowl in 2024.

Outside of the IPL, Pietersen built a stellar T20 career, featuring in top leagues like the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and Caribbean Premier League. Across 200 T20 matches, he amassed 5,695 runs at an impressive average of 33.89, with a strike rate just shy of 137.

Delhi Capitals, a team still chasing its first IPL title, has been undergoing a major rebuild. After finishing sixth in 2024, the franchise entered the auction with the largest budget among all ten teams, having released several big-name players. They held onto a core group of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel while making some blockbuster signings, including KL Rahul, Harry Brook, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc. With Pietersen now part of the setup, DC will be hoping his experience and tactical insight can help push them closer to the elusive IPL trophy.
