For the second year in a row, England’s Harry Brook has decided to withdraw from the IPL, this time stepping away from his lucrative deal with Delhi Capitals to focus on international cricket. His decision comes at a pivotal moment in his career, with speculation linking him to England’s vacant white-ball captaincy following Jos Buttler’s resignation after their disappointing Champions Trophy exit. However, pulling out of the IPL again could have serious consequences.
Delhi Capitals secured Harry Brook for ₹6.25 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, expecting him to be a key part of their campaign. But much like last season—when he withdrew after being picked due to the passing of his grandmother – Brook has once again opted out, citing the need to prioritize his international commitments. Taking to social media, the 26-year-old apologized to Delhi’s management and fans, expressing regret over his withdrawal. "I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters," he wrote.
Brook explained that after an exhausting schedule, he needs time to recharge and prepare for England’s packed calendar. "It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. To do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date." Anticipating mixed reactions, he added, “I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right. Playing for my country remains my priority and focus.”
Brook’s decision comes as England prepare for a crucial year of Test cricket. They will host India for a five-match series this summer before heading to Australia in November for an Ashes series, hoping to win the urn Down Under for the first time since 2010/11. Their schedule kicks off with a four-day Test against Zimbabwe on 22nd May at Trent Bridge, followed by six white-ball games against the West Indies before the India series begins on 20th June.
While Brook has showcased his talent in various formats for England, his IPL career remains a work in progress. His only season in the tournament came in 2023 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he made headlines with a stunning 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders but struggled for consistency, finishing with just 190 runs in 11 matches. Now, after withdrawing from back-to-back IPL seasons, questions loom over his future in the world’s biggest T20 league, with the threat of a potential two-year ban hanging over him.
