Mumbai Indians’ scouting team has unearthed yet another gem – 23-year-old Ashwani Kumar. The left-arm pacer had a debut to remember, picking up 4/24 in a match-winning spell against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
His performance wasn’t just about the numbers; it was about who he got out. Dismissing big names like Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell, Ashwani made a statement on the big stage. With Deepak Chahar (2/19) and Trent Boult (1/23) providing solid support, the young pacer stole the spotlight as Mumbai Indians secured their first win of IPL 2025 with a dominant eight-wicket victory over KKR.
After the game, captain Hardik Pandya made sure to acknowledge Ashwani’s heroics, awarding him the prestigious MI badge – a symbol of trust and belief within the squad. “Ashwani showed us what playing for the MI badge means. Congratulations! I think before the huddle, we spoke about intensity, ruthlessness, and what this MI badge means. He showed us exactly that, and we're very proud of you. Please continue,” Hardik said while patting Ashwani on his chest.
The young pacer, who comes from a humble background, was clearly emotional and grateful for the opportunity. In response, he vowed to give his all in the matches ahead. “First of all, I am very grateful that I got an opportunity to play among such great players. And I will try, that in the remaining games, I give my 100 percent and make the team win,” he said, earning a loud round of applause from his teammates.
Ashwani’s 4/24 marked the best-ever bowling figures by an Indian on IPL debut. His spell ripped through KKR’s middle order, reducing them to just 116 all out in 16.2 overs. Mumbai then chased down the target with ease, thanks to Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten 62, sealing a comfortable victory. It was a night to remember for Ashwani Kumar – a dream debut that could mark the beginning of something special.
