The IPL 2025 season has kicked off in record-breaking fashion, with the opening weekend smashing viewership milestones. But while the tournament is off to a flying start, the same can't be said for Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. These two teams have been among the most consistent performers in recent years, making their sluggish starts all the more surprising.
For MI fans, though, this isn’t exactly new territory. Losing their season opener has almost become tradition – they’ve now lost their first match 13 seasons in a row, a streak dating back to 2013. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that MI knows how to bounce back. After all, they’ve lifted the IPL trophy five times in the same period. So, while the early stumble isn’t ideal, there’s no panic in the MI camp just yet.
Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, kicked off their campaign with a thriller of a match – one that slipped through their fingers by just 11 runs. Punjab Kings' batters, led by Shreyas Iyer, put on an absolute show, setting a mammoth 244-run target. GT, however, made a real fight of it, racking up 232 in response. Jos Buttler and Sai Sudharsan led the charge, with Shubman Gill and Sherfane Rutherford providing key cameos. It wasn’t the result GT wanted, but there were plenty of positives.
Having said that, their bowling unit will need to step up. With names like Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan in the attack, GT has the firepower to stop the run flow. And what better way to prove it than against the most successful franchise in IPL history?
MI's returning skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first. Given that the last match in Ahmedabad saw GT and PBKS rack up a combined 475 runs, another high-scoring contest could be on the cards.
GT vs MI Starting XI
Both teams have a strong squad, and their Playing 11 is expected to feature some of the best names in world cricket. Here's a look at the possible lineups for GT and MI:
Gujarat Titans (GT): Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Arshad Khan, Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohamad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna
Impact Subs: Sherfane Rutherford, Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar
Mumbai Indians (MI): Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Vignesh Puthur
Impact Subs: Robin Minz, Karn Sharma, Reece Topley
As both teams have solid squads, predicting a winner in today’s match is difficult, but here’s how it might unfold:
Match Prediction: This one is a tough call. Both teams are packed with world-class talent, making it a pretty even contest on paper. But if history is anything to go by, Mumbai Indians don’t have the best record at the Narendra Modi Stadium – they’ve played there five times and managed just two wins. That said, the return of Hardik Pandya from his one-game suspension is a massive boost for MI, both in terms of leadership and balance. But even with Pandya back in the mix, there’s no ignoring MI’s reputation for slow starts. Their opening-game performance didn’t exactly inspire confidence, and given GT’s fighting spirit in their first match, the home side might just have the edge in this showdown.
