As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise, the Indian Premier League 2025 has found itself in the middle of a growing storm. Several overseas players are reportedly weighing the option of heading home early, with the shadow of escalating conflict looming large over the tournament.
This comes not long after similar worries cropped up during the Pakistan Super League, where a number of international cricketers voiced their concerns and even considered pulling out due to security fears. Now, those anxieties seem to have crossed the border into India.
The situation escalated further on Wednesday night when the IPL clash between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abruptly called off. Reports of shelling in multiple Indian cities sent shockwaves through the cricketing community. As a safety measure, the stadium was plunged into darkness and fans were quickly evacuated. Players, meanwhile, were escorted back to their hotels under tight security.
The fallout was immediate. The IPL Governing Council and BCCI scrambled to respond, holding an emergency meeting on Thursday. According to The Herald, several high-profile Australian players — including Test captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, and Mitch Marsh — are now seriously considering flying back to Australia. Coaches like Ricky Ponting and Brad Haddin, who are currently working with IPL franchises, may also follow suit.
With the situation along the border deteriorating, the BCCI has already taken the precautionary step of suspending the IPL for one week. But a bigger decision hangs in the balance: can the rest of the tournament go on at all?
A few English players, meanwhile, are reportedly heading to the UAE, choosing to remain nearby in case the tournament resumes. The BCCI remains hopeful of completing the season before May ends. That would allow India to move forward with their scheduled five-Test series in England, starting June 20. But if things don’t stabilize soon, the board may be forced to explore alternative windows — perhaps in August or September, possibly by reworking the Asia Cup calendar.
The BCCI has assured fans that the league will only be paused for a week and that an updated schedule and venues will be revealed once a proper security assessment is completed. Amid all the uncertainty, one suggestion caught the attention of many fans. Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted, “I wonder if it’s possible to finish the IPL in the UK... We have all the venues and the Indian players can then stay on for the Test series... Just a thought?” Right now, everything hinges on how the political situation unfolds in the coming days. For now, IPL 2025 hangs in the balance — caught between world-class cricket and real-world concerns.
