Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh: The Indian cricket team delivered a masterclass in aggressive, clinical T20 cricket, dismantling South Africa by seven wickets in the 3rd T20I at the HPCA Stadium to seize a crucial 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Built on a mesmerizing spell of pace bowling and an explosive start by the openers, India sealed the victory with 25 balls to spare, underlining their ruthless dominance.
The night belonged to the Indian bowlers, who successfully negated the pitch’s reputation as a high-scoring ground, reducing the powerful South African batting line-up to a mere 117 all out.
Having won the toss and elected to bowl, India's pacers ensured the decision paid immediate dividends. Spearheaded by the Player of the Match, Arshdeep Singh, the hosts tore through the South African top order, leaving the visitors reeling at 7 for 3 within the first two overs.
Arshdeep set the tone by grabbing a wicket in the very first over, a perfect demonstration of early swing and line control. Young pacer Harshit Rana followed up with two wickets in the powerplay, maintaining the pressure.
The destruction continued beyond the first six overs:
Facing a modest target of 118, the Indian top order approached the chase with a clear intention: finish it quickly. Opener Abhishek Sharma was the aggressor, putting the match out of reach almost instantly.
Abhishek Sharma smashed a blistering 38 off just 15 balls, dominating the powerplay with a combination of lofted drives and powerful pulls, ensuring India reached 68/1 by the end of the sixth over. His assault provided the much-needed foundation, compensating for the early struggles of Shubman Gill, who continued his patchy form with a scratchy 28 off 27 balls.
Despite the quick wickets of Gill and a struggling Suryakumar Yadav (12 off 11), the required run rate remained negligible. Tilak Varma (26*) and Shivam Dube provided the finishing touch. Shivam Dube ended the match in style, smashing a six and a four in quick succession to secure the seven-wicket victory in the 16th over.
With two matches left, India now heads into the final stretch with all the momentum, needing just one more victory to seal the series. South Africa faces a tough challenge to rally and force a decider.
