BCCI Shortlists Bengaluru, Chennai & Hyderabad as Possible IPL Venues for May Resumption

The BCCI is keeping its options open as it looks for a way to resume the remainder of IPL 2025, which was put on hold earlier this week due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, the board has shortlisted three possible venues — Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad — if they get the green light from the Indian government to restart the tournament later this month.

With 16 matches still to go, including the playoffs, the BCCI is preparing for a possible return in May itself. But that also means some changes to the original schedule. For instance, Eden Gardens, which was supposed to host Qualifier 2 and the big final, could miss out if the new plan is approved. Hyderabad, which was originally slated to host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, is still in the mix under the new arrangement. As of now, there's no official cut-off date from the BCCI to make a final call. Still, franchise officials were informally updated about the developments on Friday. Some of them believe that if the tournament can’t get going again this month, the board might push it to later in the year.

But rescheduling won’t be as simple as picking new venues. One of the biggest challenges the BCCI faces is the return of overseas players. Many of them have already flown back home after the pause was announced. While franchises remain hopeful that most foreign players will be available if the IPL resumes before the end of May, there’s no guarantee they’ll all be back — especially if the restart gets pushed too close to the international calendar.

After May 25, when the final was originally set to be played in Kolkata, things get complicated. Several top players will be busy with bilateral series or gearing up for the World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa, which starts on June 11 at Lord’s. For now, the wait continues. The BCCI is treading carefully, trying to keep the tournament alive while balancing political sensitivities and player availability. Whether IPL 2025 can resume in May — or needs to be pushed further — depends on how things unfold in the coming days.
