Asia Cup 2025 to Be Played in T20I Format; India & Pakistan Could Face Off Thrice

When it comes to cricket, no rivalry comes close to India vs. Pakistan. It’s the biggest spectacle in the sport, drawing massive global viewership every time these two teams face off. And tournament organizers know exactly how to capitalize on the hype. Reports suggest that the 2025 Asia Cup, set for September, could feature as many as three India-Pakistan clashes.

The 17th edition of Asia Cup is set to be played in the Twenty20 format at a neutral venue. While India holds the official hosting rights, the matches are expected to take place in either the UAE or Sri Lanka. “The tournament will be held in September. India has the hosting rights but it will be played in the UAE or Sri Lanka,” a source from the Asian Cricket Council told PTI.

Though the full schedule is yet to be announced, all eyes will be on the blockbuster India-Pakistan showdown. And if both teams make it to the final, fans could be in for a thrilling triple showdown between the arch-rivals. India and Pakistan have faced off three times in the T20I edition of the Asia Cup, and it’s India who holds the upper hand with a 2-1 record. A total of eight teams – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, the UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong – will compete for continental supremacy.

The tournament will feature 19 matches, spanning from the second to the fourth week of September. Following the 2025 tournament, the action shifts to Bangladesh in 2027 for an ODI edition. After that, Pakistan will hold the hosting rights, but the tournament itself will be staged at a neutral venue, once again in the T20 format. Rounding off this cycle, the 2031 edition will return to the 50-over format, with Sri Lanka set to host the competition.
